Group & keyword structure

Hello,

I'm wondering what's a best practice for organizing keywords into groups along with domains / urls.

I have two sites I'm tracking so I made a group for each... And inside each group I created a single domain and all the keywords I'd like to track.  (200 - 400 per each site)

It almost seems backwards to have:  Groups > Domain

for instance if my site is:  pink-showerheads.com   I have a group called  "Pink Showerheads "  and a domain inside that group "pink-showerheads.com"

From a hierarchical standpoint it seems like having:  Domain > Topic (specific url) would make sense.

I tried setting it up this way using regex radio button but it doesn't work.  All keywords are listed under each "domain" regardless of what I do.

So i tried using "new website" > "pattern: regex" :   mysite.net/my-shower-head   
and was hoping to track the keywords targeted with that article but it doesn't work.   Instead, every keyword from the first domain I made is listed there.

Is this a known flaw or am I missing something here?

Honestly from a marketers standpoint that makes perfect sense. However, the application is not designed that way. If a keyword is in two separate groups it will be searched for two separate times. Once for each group until the target for that particular search is found.

For the application's design, it makes more sense to put the two separate URLs (targets) under the same group This allows you to search for the term under different configurations, IE search the phrase in mobile, yahoo, bing etc.

My approach:
Group = Phrase or keywords
Target = Url or Domains that should rank for the phrase or keywords
Searches, the actual search phrase. This way you can configure the search for mobile, different countries, etc for each phrase.

My Conclusion:
Group is the phrase
Searches are the formatted search for the individual phrase. (mobile search "my phrase", bing search "my phrase","yahoo search "my phrase", etc
Web sites are the URLs you are tracking for that phrase

Okay just to clarify...

when you say "group is the phrase"  you mean the main keyword/topic?   

So what you are proposing would look like:

Group > URL > Searches

Group: "Setting up showerhead"
URL: "pink-showerheads.com/installation"   (the article I'm tracking)
Searches:  "setting up showerhead", "installing showerhead", "how to install showerhead",  "showerhead diy"...  (keywords associated with this specific article)

Is this what you mean?

With the exception of searches, that's close to what I use personally. I am a programmer and just built a PHP front end on my local machine so I can do other stuffs, my thinking may be backward and I am awful with words but here goes.

I would like to clarify "Searches" can be configured any number of ways using the settings, I prefer the same keywords / phrase configured for the same search different ways. When the modal pops up, it gives you multiple options to configure the search. IE, Desktop or Mobile, Location, The custom parameters section has countless configurations, see for examples https://developers.google.com/custom-se … e/cse/list

Group: "Setting up showerhead"

URL: "pink-showerheads.com/installation" , any-other-showerheads.com/page", "any-other-url-that-should-rank.for/this-phrase"

Searches: 
"setting up showerhead" Location: America
"setting up showerhead" Location: Canada
"setting up showerhead" Mobile Version
"setting up showerhead" Exact Phrase
"setting up showerhead" In URL

lol, I have my own SEO dashboard build in PHP running locally too! 
I use it to filter and join scrapebox csv's, clean up text, watermark images... all kinds of stuff!

According to your setup it looks like you use a group for every keyword...that's a ton of groups if tracking 1000 keywords

yup, 1000 keywords would be 1000 groups, and then searches for each group, the search filter in the sidebar works awesome for that.

Grouped phrases and separate groups for each user or URL gets hairy quick That 1k group list gets easier and easier to read, especially when you need to add a new target or search dimension to that particular phrase.

I don't like the idea of searching for the same keyword twice just because they are in different groups, which the application will do.

To make it clear : a keyword is searched only one time per check (if the TLD/local/custom parameters are the same).

If you have 1000 groups with the exact same keyword, serposcope will fetch google only one time for this keyword.

I see what you are doing @PromoteSolution, thanks.  The only part I don't like is that I benefit from seeing how an article/page is doing based on many related keywords.  In other words, I target many keywords for a single article and these keywords are never targeted in other articles/pages. So I would like them somehow grouped by article/page.  It's not uncommon for me to track 25-50 (or more) keywords for a single article!  I like seeing them all together so I can see how they are performing and can adjust my on-page-seo accordingly.

@serphacker ... Mr. Admin!  How do you organize your keywords?  I'd love to see an example.

If I could get serposcope to work again I will verify this. But my notes state that the keyword is searched for twice if the keyword is in two separate groups and if each group has its own target URL because the database is not updated for the second group until it runs. I am however running a separate UI to help manage the database and I might be missing a setting.
